Doing some early research, and my next phone may not be on Verizon's network. Reading up on MVNOs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_virtual_network_operator), I can get much cheaper monthly plans plus have the flexibility and freedom to jump between several "providers" by just switching out SIM cards. There's a good list of MVNOs on Wikipedia, and I think for my region AT&T is probably the best back-end carrier to go with. With this in mind, H2Owireless and Jolt both have fairly reasonable prices for 1GB and 2GB plans. OTH, Sprint has a reasonable presence here in Rochester at least, and Boost (Sprint CDMA) mobile has unlimited data plans for the same price, with the addition of "vanishing" payments. Only problem w/ sprint is that I would need a phone with a CDMA/LTE modem, which generally precludes GSM/HSPA+.

Who knows, maybe verizon will grow up by the time I'm looking into buying a new phone. ;-)

Interesting that it takes "so little" to re-enable the features.

Eureka moment: I've had my dad's old hi-fi system for quite a while now, but haven't had any speakers to use with it. For the longest time, I've simply watched OTA TV through the TV's built-in speakers while my PC-based content gets the advantage of my (quite good) desktop speakers. Going through a box of stuff from home, I found my collection of audio jack adapters: Now I've got enough cables/adapters to connect everything to the hi-fi, and I can use the 1/8" headphone jack output for my desktop speakers! Just in time for the olympics too :-)
